'Miss Americana' Director Lana Wilson Breaks Down Taylor Swift's "Astonishing Level Of Candor"

Director Lana Wilson didn't go into Miss Americana, a new Netflix documentary about the mega pop star Taylor Swift, trying to show the Taylor haters wrong.
"If yous showtime to think too much about what other people will think, it tin can just get confusing," Willson told Decider in a telephone call. For Swift, the result of moving away from that mindset was a political awakening. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Swift publicly spoke out against Republican candidate Marsha Blackburn—running for Senate in Swift's home state of Tennessee—in the 2022 midterm election. Merely the moment was not born out of nowhere, and Miss Americana captures the very moment that Swift posted that endorsement on Instagram, which she did through tears, against the wishes of her father and her team.
"That scene was a coming-of-age moment, and I similar information technology because it'southward so complicated," Wilson said. "You tin can understand where her family members and squad are coming from. This is something they hadn't done before. They had so much success over 15 years, and they all care and so much virtually Taylor's fans—she has a really special relationship with them. You can sympathize being worried about potentially alienating any of her fans. And her dad's concerns well-nigh her security, I think are really understandable, too."
Despite that intimate scene of Swift choosing her ideals over her public paradigm, and despite the fact that Miss Americana premiered at Sundance Film Festival to bulk positive reviews from critics, there were still a few who criticized the moving picture as either a public relations practice, or as lacking in authentic substance. Wilson, who won an Emmy for her difficult-hit 2013 documentary about abortion admission, admitted that reaction frustrates her.
"It'southward hard for me to understand anyone who would say in that location isn't depth, openness, and astonishing level of candor and admission in this film," Wilson said. "From my perspective, in that location was never a moment where Taylor said, 'No, I'm not game to go there.' You see that scene with her family. She talks with incredible candor and insight about having an eating disorder. I call back sometimes people have these really incommunicable, unrealistic expectations of how a glory should be. This is a human being! This is not but a glory."
"If at that place's one matter I want to say with this film," Wilson continued, "I wanted to capture Taylor as a human being beingness."
